Assertions Around ‘Oldest Soccer Club’ Resulting Dispute

Being labeled the oldest professional soccer club in the world would bring an large amount of pride and potentially, a large amount of revenue. The title of being the oldest professional club has long been claimed by many teams in England, where the sport started so many years ago. Right before the very first competitions took place in England the Football Association was created with the office game regulations back in 1863.

The oldest professional club title is now being claimed by the Crystal Palace Football club, a team of the Premier League. The title of oldest professional soccer club went to the Notts County team formed in 1862 until the Sheffield FC claimed the title as they were formed in 1857. New evidence has been uncovered by the official historian of the Crystal Palace that shows the London club to be the oldest professional soccer club.

According to Sky Sports the club historian has uncovered evidence that the Crystal Palace team was formed in 1861. As part of the world fair being held on the Crystal Palace site in 1862, under the guidance of the Crystal Palace Company, the team was formed and began playing games.

The controversy over the role of Crystal Palace came about because the club was initially formed to play cricket with soccer games scheduled around the summer cricket season. Everyone believed the team had split up in 1867 to save the cricket field from being damaged. Manning believes he has now uncovered evidence the club played soccer throughout the believed break that lasted 20 years before the Crystal Palace Company built the soccer team a stadium of their own.

Peter Manning was praised by Crystal Palace Chairman Steve Parrish for his impressive work on the history of the club that could add even more prestige to the Premier League team. The club and the Football Association share a rich history dating back to the Football Associations formation in 1863 and the clubs participation in the 1871 FA Cup. The history of the Crystal Palace Football Club starts when the team merged with the historical London County Cricket Club.
